Almost all my weddings have at least one or more adorable flower girl for their ceremony. Usually it’s two adorable little girls that walk down the aisle right before the bride comes down. It made me think about how this tradition come about. I found this article and wanted to share.

A Brief History of the Flower Girl

Throughout the changing eras of fashion and even roles of the members of the traditional wedding party, the vision of the flower girl has remained even more consistent to humankind than that of the bride herself.

When brides were very young and stepping themselves from childhood to womanhood through the wedding ceremony, the flower girl leads her forward as a symbol innocence “blooming” to become a wife and mother. In classical Roman and Greek times, the flower girl would scatter select herbs and grains to beckon fertility in a new union. Sheaths of wheat were carried in the wedding procession by medieval European flower girls.

For many genres, the only female attendants to the bride were children. This tradition continues often with multiple flower girls in large society or royal weddings. In France, it is common that all attendants in the procession are children.

The flower girl that is now classic to the modern wedding world evolved through the Victorian beauty and sentiment nurtured through Queen Victoria herself. This is the bright young girl in white with perhaps a colored sash; carrying the decorated basket of petals and floral hoop. The floral hoop, like its circular relative, the wedding ring, symbolized eternal love. With Victorian times, humanity begins to value the romantic aspects of marriage. It is celebrated that marriage not only be an economic or even political union, but also a union of true love. And in love, we all walked doe-eyed and innocent like the beautiful flower girl leading the wedding procession.

So the flower girl brings beauty, innocence, and wishes for healthy children to the wedding ceremony based on tradition alone.

In modern times, with gender roles expanded and evolution of the family from bride and groom not always involving the addition of children, our appreciation for the flower girl grows from pure sentiment: the love beauty, innocence, and whimsy.

Having a flower girl or several flower girl is a beautiful and time honored tradition that will bring special charm to your wedding, and traditionally, good luck as well.

2012 San Diego Engagements! Love is in the air!

2012 has certainly start off the year with a bang! Everyone definitely has high hopes for this year, especially being the Year of the Dragon and all =) All I can say, is that I am so grateful for all the amazing weddings that are in the works this year! Just thinking about it gets me excited! The vendors that I work with tell me that I have some of the sweetest and coolest (and gorgeous) brides & grooms! They are also pretty darn smart! My couples truly inspire me!

I’ve got some pretty amazing engagement pictures back for some of my 2012 couples. Instead of blogging them separately, I figure it’ll be fun to feature a couple of my favorite pictures of them all in one post. Here are some of my couples for 2012!

Behind the Scenes of Downtown San Diego Wedding by Wynn Austin Fine Weddings & Events

Hi Everyone,

I am beyond thrilled to share this timelapse video with you! The video was created by my wonderful friend Gene Higa of Gene Higa Photography. When Gene and I were brainstorming, I told him I had a wedding that was pretty unique in regards to the flow of the guests. My couple Joe & Darleen was married at The University Club Atop Symphony Towers and I came up with the idea of having the ceremony and the dinner reception in the same ballroom. The dancing was actually in the lounge. Gene thought it would be the perfect opportunity to do a timelapse video so the people can catch a glimpse of what goes on at a wedding before everyone arrives. It also has some pretty fun footage of my team and I running around, straightening the chairs, tying the bow to block the aisle, and setting down the aisle runner (the girls did an awesome job, that aisle was 55 feet long, and straight as a board) I know so many people are always so curious what happens behind the scenes, or they want to know, “what does a wedding planner do?” I hope this gives you a little bit of a glimpse inside my world. I had so much fun at this wedding and it was pretty exciting for me to get to relive it again today.

Annie & Julius Tropical Glamour wedding at USD Founder’s Chapel & Reception at Hyatt Mission Bay

When I was designing the wedding for Annie & Julius, I wanted to design it with both of their styles in mind. Annie wanted a very elegant and formal wedding. So I came up with the them of Tropical Glamour to bring in some of Julius style as well since he used to live in Hawaii. We decided to infuse natural elements such as dark rattan and dark wood with the romance of crystals, and mecury candles with an array of shades of purple florals.

Love Note from Darleen {Wedding at University Club Atop Symphony Towers}

Darleen & Joe were my last wedding of the year! It was such a gorgeous wedding with a adorable couple to help me close out such an amazing year. It was such a pleasure working with them. Because of past wedding experiences I knew how stressful wedding planning and the day of could be. I also witnessed how easy it is for brides to forget the little details. With that being said, I knew I wanted to hire a wedding coordinator when it came time to plan my own wedding. Hiring Wynn Austin was the first decision of our wedding planning and the BEST choice we could have ever made. My husband and I hired Wynn for the entire process, from start to finish. Throughout our year of planning, Wynn was consistent, professional and always there for every question no matter how small. It was great to have somebody who is well known in the business and who had built great relationships with all the vendors you could possibly need. Wynn kept us on track and most importantly, within our budget. On our big day, Wynn and her team did not disappoint. She even insured all of my personal belongings such as bouquet, toasting flutes and cake cutter and server were not left behind. Trust me, it’s actually easy to forget the little things when you’re having so much fun. Throughout the year, I could sense that Wynn was genuinely excited for me and on the day of, I felt like her team was just as excited as I was. I truly enjoyed working with Wynn and her staff. I highly recommend for any bride-to-be to hire Wynn Austin to make her big day unforgettable. My wedding was beautiful, unforgettable and as perfect as it could have possibly been thanks to Wynn.

Megan & Scott Engagement Shoot {Persimmons Orchard in Fallbrook, California}

Megan & Scott are one of my couples that are getting married in September 2012. I absolutely adore them! When Megan asked me to be her stylist and designer for the engagement shoot, I was beyond excited! I knew I wanted something very special and unique for them. The idea of Persimmons came to mind because of the gorgeous hue of orange that it has. I was so lucky to find this gem of an orchard on a private farm in Fallbrook. From there, I came up with the color palette of orange, greys, and a touch of blue for Scott. =) On our shopping trip, I found the gorgeous orange and grey dress! It caught my attention from the corner of my eyes. It was perfect. I wanted to focus primarily on the background because it was so beautiful but I’m a big believer of details so we added some fun props (some I crafted) that you’ll see in the pictures.

Stephanie & Bobby Wedding at The Crossings in Carlsbad, Ca

Stephanie & Bobbie’s Wedding at The Crossings in Carlsbad, California:

I met Stephanie and her mom at The Grand Del Mar bridal show a couple of years ago. It is hard to believe that it’s been that long. But when we met in my office, I just absolutely adored them. I had the privilidge with working with Stephanie, her mom, and Bobby for about a year and a half and just fell in love with these high school sweethearts. They went to high school right across the street from my house and told me stories about how they met in the marching band. Even know, when ever it’s that time of year and I hear the marching bands practicing, it reminds me of them. When they were looking for a venue to get married in San Diego, they wanted a place that reflected San Diego. They loved traveling and discovering California, so when they came to see The Crossings they just fell in love with it. The venue is located up on a hill in Carlsbad, and had a ballroom that was completely open with all windows for guests to see the amazing views of the mountains and the ocean. The lawn where the ceremony took place had a breathtaking view.

I am so grateful to be in the wedding industry and get the opportunity to be a part of so many families. This wedding was so special to me and will always hold a special place in my heart.
